Wow, Taj… Those who say that the king of the tabla is no more. Renowned musician and Padma Vibhushan maestro Zakir Hussain, who mesmerized the world with the beat of tabla, breathed his last at a hospital in San Francisco. He was 73.

For many, the first memory of the legend is not a concert but the 1990s television advertisement for Brooke Bond Taj Mahal tea. The ad was not just marketing gold but a part of the shared memory of an entire generation. We still remember the maestro with Taj Mahal as his backdrop and the magical words, “Wah Ustad nahi, wah Taj boliye”.

One of the world’s most iconic tabla players, Ustad Zakir Hussain, has not only revolutionized the landscape of Indian classical music but has also received several prestigious awards in his illustrious career. His contribution to both Indian and global music is unparalleled, earning him recognition from different corners of the world.

Zakir Naik was suffering from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a lung disease. He was admitted to the hospital two weeks ago. He was admitted to the ICU after his health deteriorated. In this disease, the lungs become stiff, which makes it difficult to breathe. doctor,s said that apart from ageing, smoking is also one of the major risks of this disease.

He was suffering from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. There was a situation of confusion till late Sunday night. After hours of speculation, Zakir’s sister Khurshid Auliya said, “Zakir died after turning off the ventilator machine at 4 pm San Francisco time (5:30 am on Monday).

He leaves behind an extraordinary legacy, one that countless music lovers around the world will cherish,” the family said. He will be laid to rest on Wednesday or Thursday. Zakir Naik is survived by his wife Antonia Minecola and their daughters Anissa and Isabelle.

He took the tabla to the global stage and enthralled millions with its unique rhythm. He blended Indian classical traditions seamlessly with global music and became a symbol of cultural unity.

Rich in talent, Zakir Hussain Ji created masterpieces that transcended the boundaries of language and culture. His music will continue to unite humanity.

Zakir worked with almost all the eminent Indian artists of his time, including sitar player Pandit Ravi Shankar, sarod player Ali Akbar Khan and santoor player Pandit Shivkumar Sharma. Zakir used to call the tabla his ‘partner, brother and friend’.
