
The government on Monday appointed Revenue Secretary Sanjay Malhotra as the new Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for a three-year term. Malhotra will succeed Shaktikanta Das whose term ends on December 10.

Sanjay Malhotra is a 1990 batch Indian Administrative Service officer of the Rajasthan cadre. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur and a Master’s degree in Public Policy from Princeton University, USA.
Malhotra has worked in diverse sectors including power, finance and taxation, information technology, mines etc. Currently, he is Secretary (Revenue) in the Ministry of Finance. In his previous assignment, he held the post of Secretary in the Department of Financial Services, Ministry of Finance, Government of India. He has extensive experience in finance and taxation in the state as well as central government.
As a part of his current assignment, he plays a key role in tax policy formulation with respect to direct and indirect taxes.
